In a mood in which he was feeling the “delight, the evanescence and love within which we are all enfolded”, my dear friend, Hiroshi “YOTA” Tanaka, wrote the score for a CD album, NATURE SONG.  It is the third offering in a trilogy titled MARVELAND, in which Yota-san musically and emotionally,  maps a legendary world of wonder [another word for miracle] in a transcendent observation of the human drama of endlessly repeating histories.

In NATURE SONG, Tanaka is remembering a carefree time in his life when he ran in the fields, swam in the rivers and the sea, when Mother Nature was less challenged, and when, perhaps, human society was  more inclusive and caring of each other and better cared for the heavenly body from which it derives its sustenance.

Yota’s music evokes memories of an ancient place and time from which our species has continuously played out its transitory existence.  Moving between joy and sorrow as we evolve, our individual lives ebbing and flowing and then returning to their source–as naturally as do the rivers–before  finally dissolving into the One Ocean.

The quality of our  journey and the quality of our Natural world depend upon the quality of our thoughts and deeds.  Song titles like “Gentle Mind”, “Mountain Glow”, “Bird Song” and “Mind Flower” carry the spirit of Yota’s gentleness and childlike wonder of Nature at her finest and free-est.

As I am uplifted by the hopefulness and joy of the title track, “Nature Song”, and feel the genuine childlike wonder carried within it, I know that I don’t want to come to the end of my life in a condition of nostalgia, longing for a better, earlier time.  

In this period, NOW, 2011 the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, there is still time to choose to change the patterns of carelessness for our earthly Mother and each other, and to invite the natural expansion of our consciousness to reach higher levels where we are the true “enjoyers”, unaffected by the dualities.  This can be achieved when our tune is harmonized with Nature’s own song; not another version of  “Play it again, Sam”.   What do you think/feel?

Master Mingtong Gu, Teacher and Healer

A friend forwarded me something today which I want to share with all.  It is about an action that will take place on November 11:

Shingo Sato was a man who was true to his name.  SHIN = the Truth of the Heart.  Shingo was true to himself.  Honesty was his Way. He could not even fake artifice.  Remarkable!

Listening to his heart, instead of the pressures of his culture to “succeed in business”, he dared dream a dream of a life of little stress, windsurfing in the gorgeous ocean around Maui.  He was handsome and physically strong and very young-looking at age 58 when he died suddenly of a massive brain hemorrhage.

Self-sufficient, creative, he had a unique sense of humor, and was very generous with his attributes, helping cater my daughter and son-in-law’s wedding party, taking care of stray cats and needy birds, and serving the few lucky people he included in his quiet life.

In the last 6 years, Shingo-chan practiced calligraphy, writing the Prajna Paramita Sutra–the Buddha’s Heart Sutra–over and over.  He experimented with an organic honey business (which he named “To My Honey”), mastered the use of the computer, taught himself to play the guitar (quite beautifully), baked special Indian breads and pizza, and produced 12 YouTube videos under the pen name Samurai Date Rokuemon. Shingo admired Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga, a retainer of Lord Date Masamune  from Sendai who was the first Japanese to act as envoy to the Americas in the 1600’s.

Like Tsunenaga, Shingo was the first in his Sendai clan to travel afar.  He’d visited Tunisia, France, the U.S. and Bali.  He, too, was a pioneer–and gentle man–who shared his beautifully decorated home-baked goods on birthdays, Mother’s Day, and Christmas.  His Yule log cake was a perfect artistic confection.  Before his sudden passing on October 1, 2010, he was investigating the possibility of running a mobile lunch restaurant.  It might have succeeded wildly, even if it sold only his homemade Indian naan and his mouthwatering lamb curry.

I met Shingo in 2002 when he worked as sushi chef at the Diamond Resort.  A friend had invited me to join her there and I soon began to take advantage of the Resort’s kama’aina membership to the ofuro.  I treated myself every week to a long hot soak, Japanese style, and then to sushi afterward.   Although Shingo’s English was difficult to understand back then, we communicated well enough to become friends.  I remember a pivotal conversation in which he told me he loved jazz.  I did too.  It was remarkable to me that with our entirely different backgrounds, we had many quirky similarities in our tastes.

The first time Shingo visited my place in Kula for dinner, he became very animated because he realized we could see the waves coming into one of his favorite windsurfing spots: Kanaha. Later, when he’d taken the courageous step to leave the Diamond Resort and start a new life in Kula, he might call me for an eye-witness wave report before traveling down the mountain to the North shore.

In 2004, I was planning a trip to Japan to gather subject matter for writing stories for Eye Ai Magazine.  I was interested in Sendai tansu.  Shingo was planning on visiting his family at about the same time, and invited me to come to Sendai to meet them.  I was the first American that they had ever had visit their home.  Although they had painful memories from the days of WWII, I was welcomed warmly and generously.  They treated me like family.   Shingo’s mother, Chiyoe san, gifted me with two of her most lovely kimonos, brother and sister-in-law Tatsuo san and Masako san hosted delicious meals with local specialties and brother Shozo san took me to an historic tansu workshop and drove us to Matsushima and places beyond.  It was a memorable journey which included the last of the cherry blossoms and Date Masamune’s castle gate on that visit.

In 2005, Shingo planned out a trip to Japan for the two of us.  It was brilliant, down to the last difficult detail of bus and rail schedules in obscure places on Noto Hanto and Sado Shima.  Our favorite experience turned out to be a meal of fresh sashimi in a small town named Anamizu.  We made a return visit to Sendai, and this time visited the grave of Chiyoe san, who had passed away a few months before.  I promised her I would always remain friends with Shingo.

After Sendai, we went to Kamakura before a stop in Yokohama, where Shingo insisted upon acting as body guard for me in case there were yakuza (Japanese gangsters) about while I interviewed Japanese tattoo master Horiyoshi III.  Until he died, Shingo kept his eye on me.  He passed by my place each night returning from work, and slowed his pickup to make sure all seemed in order on the property.

Samurai Date Rokuemon was one of the most important characters in my life, I am more fully realizing this each day he will not return.  Although simply friends and still fond of each other, we hadn’t made the effort lately to visit to share news and a meal. It was grace that we spoke warmly on the phone the week before he died.  It happened when  I was in California, he in Okinawa.  His sudden death has revealed the immensity of the loss of his beingness and is offering a sharp lesson to look ever more deeply into–or compassionately past–the idiosyncrasies of a loved one.  Memories, now, remind me of how fortunate I have been to know Shingo.

One of Shingo’s favorite jazz tunes was John Coltrane’s  instrumental version of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” .  As our miraculous friendship was deepening, Shingo once wrote me that he was a little sad because he was kind of a wild cat who hadn’t learned how to make a place in the “world of words, like a right way, happiness and love. . .”.  Yet, I am extremely grateful to testify that Shingo’s actions reflected the One Love, and I was on the receiving side of a great deal of love, protection and care from a very dear friend, lover, and true samurai–a man of spirit and honor.

The last time I could even remotely be called an “activist” was in 1959 when I was a freshman at University of Florida.  These were the days of segregation in the U.S.

Coming from a Northern State, I had never seen separate drinking fountains and hand sinks for white people and “colored” people, as the signs said.

My family abhorred prejudice, and this was instilled in me deeply. My 18-year old heart hurt empathizing with the hurt all the “colored” people must feel to be treated in this manner.   My personal activism was not great, but began with my using the drinking fountain marked “colored only” when I was in public places, and then extended to sitting in the back of the Greyhound bus which took me from Northern Florida through Macon, GA, to East Lansing, Michigan during vacation times.  The scowls and sidelong glances from white people as I spoke animatedly with my “colored” seat mates, including a Howard University student, did not deter me.  Later learning the unfortunate fate of many of those who defied this negative social order, I realized that I was somehow very protected.

Since those days, I have been aware of a lot of injustice in the world, but other than voting for someone who promised to change it, participating electronically through MoveOn.org, leaving a phone message on a Senator’s hot line, or donating to various causes, like Save Darfur campaign, I admit that I never have taken the time to search out a person of influence to register my feelings against something that I felt was extremely irresponsible.

Not until today, that is.

I enjoy watching the HGTV channel, which is all about good design in living.   I find myself grinning at every “reveal”, enjoying the pleasure of the people whose space has been upgraded beautifully.  For me it is “feel good” t.v. and entertaining.  Apparently the folks who watch this channel are a target demographic for Allstate Insurance Company, because they run numerous commercials.   Heavy duty actor, Dennis Haysbert, is the Allstate spokesperson.   I have always noticed an edginess to Allstate’s commercials, that never fails to wipe the grin off my face.  Their underlying current is FEAR.

Fear is what sells insurance.  Our fear of what might happen in some future time fuels us to buy various insurance.  Allstate understands this and, of course, plays up to it to sell more insurance.  O.K.,this is free enterprise, this is their right.

A few days ago, I turned on HGTV and caught part of Allstate’s new ad campaign.  What I saw was a close up of a man’s hand gouging a long hideous scratch along the side of a shiny vehicle in a parking garage.   Then on the screen came the words:  “MAYHEM IS COMING…  Are you in good hands?”

MAYHEM IS COMING????? Allstate is predicting mayhem?  It is the most socially irresponsible commercial I have ever seen.  I understand that Allstate needs to manipulate fear in order to sell more insurance, but this latest commercial is unconscionable, in my opinion.   I am choosing to believe that Allstate is ignorant of the effect a message like that has on the collective psyche, beyond stimulating the urge to buy insurance.

Humanity is already traumatized by a collapsing world financial situation, the National housing collapse, Wall Street debacle, BP oil spill, Global Warming, and the concurrent Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan wars.   It is not necessary to add to this fear or be party to whipping it up to panic level, as is possible when hundreds of thousands of viewers are bombarded with the message.

Not only does the visual message have an immediate negative impact, but on the quantum level—a level that science has proven is just as valid, though not visible—the scary specter spreads unseen, and seeps its way into the unconscious mind of every viewer creating even more worry, concern, fear.

We create whatever it is that we put attention upon. This is a Universal Rule of manifestation.

One of our recurring themes on Miracles and Grace is to place our attention on what is of positivity, of balance, cohesiveness, coherence, to bring about a great healing of our world; together we can re-build upon that foundation.  We wish to raise the consciousness of humanity, not feed its ignorant, dark side.   In his book, “POWER vs. FORCE”, Dr. David Hawkins remarks: “We’ve become fully accountable, whether we like it or not.  We’re at the point in the evolution of our collective awareness where we may even assume stewardship of consciousness itself.  Humanity is no longer resigned to passively paying the price of ignorance. . .”

Today, I obtained the telephone number of Allstate’s Corporate Headquarters and registered my view about their new campaign.  I spoke to one of the executive secretaries who was extremely accommodating.  She informed me that Allstate is getting calls from other people who share my feelings.  I will check back in a week to see how many more people are taking stewardship of consciousness and speaking up for themselves and their neighbors.  Hopefully, Allstate will rethink their output, take responsibility for the potential cost of their ads upon the communal consciousness, and will withdraw this insidious commercial series.

In the end, what do we really need to fear?  Truly, aren’t we already in Good Hands ?

As the longest day of the year comes to an end, an opportunity for a new way of being begins . . .

This is a crossroad moment for us, should we choose to take it this way.  The Summer Solstice graces us by providing a portal of opportunity through which we can walk with unusual grace and ease, moving with the flow of Nature’s own rhythm.  No wonder it has been celebrated for countless centuries.

The key to opening wide this portal of potential– this Portal of Possibility–is a deep feeling of gratitude for all the bounty in our life.  (not a bad idea any day!)  This feeling is nothing short of a communion.  It is a quantum communication with the Infinite Universal Field which seems only too willing to provide our heart’s desires when beckoned forth through this medium.  This is my experience, anyway.

Watching the sun setting on this day, I cannot help but be filled with awe at the natural beauty that surrounds me here on this beautiful Island of Maui.    As I photograph, an owl glides silently by.  She is a symbol to me of death and rebirth—another portal, underlining the importance to consider what might be hampering me and needs to be let go of right now, in order to have more space to enjoy what comes next.

To my visitors and companions moving through this passageway, I bid you a very good journey.

Ten days before his 11^th birthday (12/9/02) DECLAN GALBRAITH released his first single, “Tell Me Why”.

The largest choir in history assembled from all over the UK and Ireland joining Declan to sing his song for a Guinness World Record.

I’m thinking about my young grandchildren, Jules and Abbott, and the world that they are inheriting and I couldn’t help but wonder:  What would our world look like if all of us from around the globe joined together to “sing” a response to Declan’s question?  It could be a harmony that has never been heard before in our Uni-verse, our One Song.

living beings are able to hear it clearly

so that all suffering in them cease,

and understanding comes to their hearts

and they transcend the path of suffering (sorrow) and death.

The Universal Dharma door is already open.

The sound of the rising tide is heard clearly

And a miracle happens

A beautiful child appears in the heart of a lotus flower

one single drop of this compassionate water

Is enough to bring back the refreshing spring to our mountains and rivers.

Listening to the sound of the bell

I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve

My mind becomes calm, my body relaxed

a smile is born on my lips.

Following the sound of the bell

my breath guides me back to the safe island of mindfulness.

In the garden of my heart the flowers of peace bloom beautifully
