I recently became aware of a beautiful song by Sarah Mclachlan, “Ordinary Miracle”, which expresses the heart-view of “Miracles and Grace”.

We hustle around so fast these days, that it is easy to miss the abundance of ordinary, everyday miracles, even when they are right under our noses.

C.S. Lewis wrote: “Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see”.

WE, THE WHOLE

Miracles and Grace reveals–through story–the abundance of ordinary/everyday miracles presenting themselves to our consciousness every single day.

Raising consciousness expands the mind to perceive more of a truth that we are not an insignificant dot on the globe, but are constantly reflecting and affecting each other.

Long before modern physics came up with the hologram as an essential model of the Universe, an ancient Indian teaching story, the Avatamsaka sutra, spoke to the unity, interconnectedness and interdependence of all creation.

“Indra’s Net” ~ In the heavenly realm, the god Indra cast a net that extends infinitely throughout space. A multifaceted crystal is attached at each of its nodes. Every single crystal reflects, and is being reflected in, all of the other crystals, endlessly. The slightest change in one crystal is reflected as change in each of the others.

This alignment of modern science with ancient philosophy allows us to imagine each of ourselves as a single crystal on that net, affected by and affecting each other in infinite ways. Simply considering the impact our every thought, feeling, word, or deed has on everyone and everything brings a profound awakening. . .and a sense of responsibility for not only ourselves, but the whole organism we call our world, of which we are an integral part.

There have been civilizations who understood our interconnectedness, and lived in ways that supported it. The ancient/tribal way was to band together in Community. All was organized around the principle of WE (not me vs.you).

Every thought, word and deed accompanied by heart-feeling strengthens our conversation with the entire Universe. Together WE have the power–with just one action–to manifest a change for the whole of our planet Earth. WE are essentially that crystal.

Today, I am projecting a visualization and an intention for a world where we live in peaceful balance and harmony, sharing our best with our neighbor and demonstrating caring for the quality of life of future generations.

What we intend, we create. WE are All One; WE are the WHOLE.

HEARTS MEETING IN BALI

In 1995, after the end of my 2nd marriage, I decided to go to Bali to grieve, so as not to burden my loving family. My work, then, was healing others but I needed to heal my own soul, and chose Bali because of its legendary living spirituality. Hindu tradition combined with an indigenous spiritual culture perceives sentience in every form; and that aliveness, not a usual perspective in the West, is enchantingly pervasive. Birth and Death—the natural aspects of living—are celebrated here.

Everywhere I went, walking or riding, I was aware of the deep spiritual practices of the people of Bali. There were altars everywhere, tended daily, exquisitely laden with fruits, flowers and rice. Beautiful Balinese women in traditional dress could be seen almost any time of day carrying trays of offerings to various altars throughout countryside, seaside villages and towns. The sound of gamelan music being practiced or performed permeated the hot, humid October days and nights with magical vibrations. Nowhere else in my world travels had I seen such devotion to the sacred expressed so openly.

Day by day, steeped in this healing environment, I began to let go of the burden of my recent dissolution and felt my heart opening in Bali’s atmosphere of gentleness and grace.

My last week, I traveled to the fairly new Serai Resort in Candi Dasa, situated on the Bali Sea. I noticed a altar on their lawn near the beach. It appeared to be very old. I asked the concierge about it and was told that in Bali, when someone develops a piece of land, they allow whoever had an altar on that land to continue to maintain it and to worship there. I had made an altar in my room with shells and flowers and a photo of my beloved Teacher at that time, Jean Dunn.

One evening, standing on my patio, I noticed a woman gracefully carrying an offering tray to the Serai’s altar across the lawn, about 30 feet away. She looked directly at me, and I returned her gaze, and she turned and approached me. Wordlessly, we went into my room to my little altar. The woman placed flowers on it, and pressed rice grains at my forehead’s 6th chakra, and as we gazed into each other’s eyes, I “heard” her SILENTLY ask me to heal her. Without hesitation, I placed my hands on her where Intuition guided me. When I removed my hands, she smiled, bowed her head and turned and left. Not an audible word had been exchanged.

Is this not the miracle language of the heart?

LISTENING TO INNER GUIDANCE

Every place has a special time of year when Nature unveils Her finest. Cherry Blossoms in Japan or Washington, D.C. might be some of the first images that come to mind. I think of early spring in Sacramento, California when profuse displays of camellias and gaudy color-clashing azaleas grace the community.
Upcountry Maui offers a spectacular experience in May and June as hundreds of jacaranda trees come into full purple bloom. The trunks of the wide-branching trees are deepened in color due to frequent showers and the flowers’ purple is enhanced in the diffused light of clouds.
A few days ago, after a walk in the woods with a friend, we decided to drive to her home via a route that would give us some of the best postcard views of the jacarandas in full glory: the Upper Kula highway. “Aren’t the jacarandas gorgeous this year?” we remarked to each other. “Yes, just gorgeous!” we agreed, almost breathless.

I dropped off my friend and continued home, passing more of the blooming beauties, thinking I might want to photograph them and send images to mainland family and friends.

Next day, I was pretty tired after working out, but as I was driving back home, I felt this overwhelming urge: Go up to the jacarandas–RIGHT NOW! It was lightly raining, but I did have a camera with me. . . hesitating for a moment, I heeded the urgent ‘message’.

Curious as to what I would find, I slowly drove the up the winding Highway, enjoying the vast views of open ranch land and rolling green hills covered with mist that hid Haleakalaā’s peak. Loosened by the rain, thousands of flowers carpeted the ground underneath the many trees I passed.

Finally, I came around the bend where I had planned to take photos, and pulled to the side of the country road. There, under the splendor of a jacaranda tree, was a beautiful young couple. As in a fairy tale, she was in her bridal gown, posing for her groom.

Was this not a miracle?
